JobKaster is the latest web and mobile application for location-based job searching and recruiting. I was tired of visiting sites like CareerBuilder or Monster, entering my job title, skills, and location and then be presented with results like this. Finding a job in a certain location should be fun, informative, quick, and easy. That's why I built JobKaster. Instead of entering a center point, radius, city, state, or zip-code, JobKaster automatically zooms in on your current location (if you let it) and displays jobs around you, including their distance from your current location. Want to see jobs somewhere else? Simply scroll the map to your desired location and available jobs magically appear!
Jobs also show up on the sidebar.
Click on a job on the map or click the little blue arrow above a job box in the sidebar to select a job. The job box in the sidebar opens up to display more information about the available opportunity and presents a link to go directly to the employer website to apply.
Now when you select a job, other nifty things happen. In the upper left-hand corner of the map, two tabs appear. One is titled "Nearby" and the other is titled "Demographics."
Clicking the "Nearby" tab allows you show nearby parking, public transportation, schools, and restaurants. You also get to see the WalkScore for the city.
Clicking the "Demographics" tab allows you to see area demographics including median household income, average commute time, median single family home value, median home size, and percentages of single males and single females.
JobKaster makes it easy for you to evaluate walkability, transportation, livability, and lifestyle when choosing your job.
Not to be forgotten is the handy search bar which allows you to narrow your search by typing in keywords. The map and sidebar will automatically update with the results of your search even as you scroll the map!
Another of the more unique things about JobKaster is that as you browse for a job as a registered job seeker you can optionally broadcast your location and skills to recruiters. If you wanted, you could log in to JobKaster via your smartphone, tuck your phone in your pocket, and be broadcasting your professional profile to nearby recruiters! You are your walking resume!
What about recruiters? Recruiters have almost the same functionality as job seekers. As a recruiter, when you log in you are presented with a map that shows nearby job seekers that are currently logged in to the site and actively searching for jobs. Unlike job seekers, recruiters do not broadcast their location (for fear they might be overrun by eager job hunters).
Active job seekers also show up in the sidebar with their approximate distance from you.
Click on a job seeker on the map or click the little blue arrow above a job seeker box in the sidebar to select a potential candidate. The job seeker box in the sidebar opens up to display more information about the candidate including their professional description and an optional link to their online resume, profile, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc. In addition, an envelope icon will be shown allowing you to email the candidate. If the candidate has entered a contact phone number in their profile and set their preferences accordingly, you might also see a phone or text message icon. Clicking these icons will allow you to call or text message the candidate (perhaps to send them a link to your application page or meet up in person).
When candidates with titles that match the positions your are looking to fill (set up in your recruiter profile) are nearby, a notification will appear over the map alerting you to their presence. Clicking on the candidate name or title will select them on the map and in the sidebar.
Of course, there is also the handy search bar which allows you to narrow your candidate search by typing in keywords. The map and sidebar will automatically update with the results of your search even as you scroll the map!
